As a Homeopath, I often get asked if Homeopathy can help during Menopause. The answer is Yes.

I support many women with many different symptoms leading up to and during the menopausal years. I also used homeopathy to support myself through this life transition.

When I started having hot flushes during my menopause, I thought other than HRT there was nothing I could do.  After meeting with Vanessa and starting a remedy, which was only for about a week they stopped.  I am over the moon and would totally recommend trying homeopathy remedies. It’s amazing how they work naturally (Mrs R.L)

Homeopathy can be used alongside HRT or as an alternative. I support women looking for a natural approach and also women on HRT.

Menopause is a normal stage of female life and is inevitable for all women. Only in the last couple of years, has it begun to be spoken about more openly and get more media attention, but sadly many women still suffer in silence.

I am passionate about supporting women during this transitional stage. It’s a part of life’s journey and doesn’t have to be a negative experience. It may already be a time of change for you, perhaps children may be fleeing the nest, so I see it as a time to re-evaluate life, a bit like coming to a crossroads and deciding which road to take.

It is never too early or too late to prepare. The more aware we are of what Menopause is, and of what happens, the better able we are to support ourselves.

What is the menopause?

Menopause is actually a date in time, defined as 12 months after your last menstrual period (where there is no other biological or physiological cause for periods to have ceased). Your ovaries are no longer producing eggs. The average age in the UK is currently 51 years.

The time or transition leading up to Menopause is called the Peri-menopause. The length of time varies for every woman but generally starts 5-10 years before.

It is a time of major hormone change as ovarian oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone hormone production gradually declines. This is when symptoms start to be experienced. Click here to learn more about the role of these hormones.

Hormones are chemical messengers that play a key role in our ability to function. They are intricately balanced so any slight change in one hormone has a knock-on effect to other hormone responses.

It’s a bit like a finely tuned orchestra with each hormone playing its part. So, it’s not surprising that so many symptoms are linked to this stage of life.

In many ways, it is the reverse of puberty but with all the added day-to-day stress. You may have a stressful and demanding job, maybe you’re having to look after elderly relatives, or have children at home. So many things can be demanding your time and attention.

It can be hard to keep going when you aren’t feeling 100% yourself.

Symptoms

You may find that periods that used to be regular are now becoming irregular. They may be lighter or heavier. Other common symptoms during this time are insomnia, mood swings, and anxiety.

Many people associate menopause with only hot flushes and night sweats. So, it’s not surprising that many women experience symptoms and don’t consider that it may be hormonal related. Little is spoken of the mental and emotional symptoms which are mistaken for depression.

There are currently 34 recognised symptoms (but possibly as many as 66).

Menopause symptoms

As you can see there are physical, mental and emotional symptoms. How many do you recognise or experience?

Symptoms are individual to you, so how you experience your menopausal journey is likely to be different from friends.

Not everyone suffers from hot flushes and night sweats.

A BBC menopause survey revealed that of the women asked –

  • over 40% reported their mental health/mood was affected
  • 23% reported it reduced their enjoyment of life and
  • 25% wanted to stay at home

What does Menopause mean to you?

Menopause means different things to different women; it is so individual.

For me, it meant I would never be able to have more children. I struggled with this, not that I wanted more! It was the fact that the choice was being taken away from me.

What does it mean for you?

How Homeopathy can support you?

Homeopathy treats you as an individual, so it’s important to understand what menopause means to you. The consultations not only focus on your individual symptoms but more importantly how they are impacting your life. It’s a holistic approach to health.

HRT is the treatment of choice within the NHS. This suits many women but not everyone. You may be looking for a more natural approach, or not want to take HRT or be able to, or may still have some symptoms that you would want to address. Homeopathy is another choice to support you.  It’s important to find the right support for you.

How you experience your symptoms is individual to you, and likely to be different from another woman with similar symptoms. Therefore, the chosen homeopathic remedies will be different.

Homeopathy involves regular consultations initially. The first consultation is 90 minutes, with follow-up consultations in the region of 60 minutes. This allows you time to talk and tell your story and be listened to. When else do you get this amount of time to talk about yourself!

Homeopathy looks at all aspects of health, including lifestyle, diet, and exercise, all these components are important when looking at this stage of your life.

Homeopathy isn’t a quick fix to health issues; you need to be committed and willing to make changes. I can offer suggestions and am very happy to support you with homeopathy but I can only walk beside you. Small sustainable changes can make a big difference over time.
